During the earnings call today, CEO and President of DirecTV Michael D. White has announced that they have their own 4K Video On Demand (VOD) service 4K start "before the end of the year." White also talked about the rest of the ambitious plans 4K DirecTV.

White told the audience he hopes "in 2015 or early '16 in a position to be content live-stream" (3840 x 2160) resolution ultra-definition.
This depends on the successful launch of two new satellites to the American market in the next 18 months. New Birds "unlock much additional capacity to our system, and we hope that something will be used by this ability to, 4K content will be able to stream," White said.

When asked whether the quality of service is better than it is with HD cable right now, White said. "I do not know - I have not seen - I know, Comcast is working .. and I have not seen execution .'m sure they do a great job, but I certainly hope fully, with the two new satellites up, please give us a unique advantage of the ability to be able to provide an exceptional customer experience. And as I said actually hope before we even these satellites (4K) to get services before the end of the year. "
White said DirecTV is starting to receive native 4K content as one of the challenges to 4K VOD and broadcast live via satellite works.
